This plan identifies local hazards and outlines strategies to reduce risks, protect lives and property, strengthen community resilience, and support long-term preparedness and recovery efforts. The planning process helps communities proactively reduce impacts while maintaining eligibility for FEMA mitigation funding.

Residents, businesses and community partners are invited to complete a survey about local disasters as Mahaska County updates its Hazard Mitigation Plan, which is used by all cities and schools within the county.
Hazard mitigation is the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. It is most effective when implemented under a comprehensive, long‑term mitigation plan, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The survey can be accessed by clicking HERE. Please submit responses by June 12, 2026.
